With such a deep and pondering question I can only wonder how to answer such a question. Well I will take a crack at it by saying the analysis of music is really similar to the analysis of art . Now when you look at a piece of art be it the Mona Lisa or something that Frank Miller just drew crudely art has a story and style to it that reflects the artists. The same concept can be used to describe music in the same Fashion.
Now to explain this concept a little more thoroughly I will illustrate the stereotypes of genres. When I hear a band like Iron Maiden and compare it with Tyler Swift I realize that that hardcore Metal Group has a brutal and Violent vibe in comparison to the Innocence of little Tyler Swift. When you see a Heavy Metal group you see dark clothes , long hair and they tend to look like a shower is long over due but when you see a country singer you see a clean cut girl who everybody just loves and isn't afraid of. To some it up stereotypes and genres help segregate and purifier the music to a gracious extent. Stereotyping is one way to analyze music. I don’t think that analyzation of music is takes away from the experience of music in fact I do believe it adds to it. When you realize whets going on you can improve upon your taste and judgment in music to enhance the product that you are listening to.
I personally enhance the quality of what I am listening to by sitting down and realizing what I am listening to. When I analyze music I mostly play back certain parts of the song that I thought where bomb and when I go back and forth through it I can sense where more adjustments could have been made and what element of the song or beats can bring the song to a more heighten sense. An example of this is when I listen to Steel Panther I realize that the song is no longer just stupid and corny but that the song has a different guitar solos and drum beats that make it more exiting for people to listen to. I know some people just listen to songs because they sound cool but if you really listen to the beats, the insurments, the lyrics and vibe you can get a sense of personality from the music that makes it unique. Being unique and artistic is one of the greatest goals of musician to have their own sound , vibe and feel is a heighten level for a musician to anyzling the music makes the experience like thousand times better than just listening to what sounds good. So to conclude all of my nonsense I do suggest that people should really listen to what they are hearing so they can get the full vibe of what they are enjoying them selves to.
Phil you are absolutely correct. Music is art. And I don’t think analyzing and pondering music takes away from its essence. Somebody has to create it for us to listen to. I do find it funny though how we stereo type different genres. All hard rock and heavy metal bands are satanists. All country singers go to church and believe in God. All rap artists are gang bangers. What does that make Justin Bieber? Ha ha! Rich! Most people like some kind of music. It’s a huge market.
ReplyDeleteIts all about the money honey. Somebody has to analyze and package the stuff. The lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish is now doing country. He is well liked and accepted. I hate the misconceptions and preconceived ideas attached to certain kinds of music. Unfortunately in most instances our preferences divide us instead of joining us together. I love rock. I always have and probably always will. What does that tell you about me? That I like rock and that is all.
What you listen to is not the sum total of who you are. How absurd. But birds of the same feather flock together and we believe the hype and bull. Well I think its time for me to rock n roll out of here. Later and God bless you Phil.
How can you compare a male band to a young girl who sings country. To compare those types of music is like comparing steak to meatloaf. Unfortunately I have to disagree with you on this. I doubt seriously that Taylor Swift is going after the same fan base that a band like “Kiss “ or “Iron Madden” are going after. If you are analyzing these too together obviously the brutal and violent are going to think that Taylor Swift is trash. That’s why I think analyzing music can’t be done. I think it is a natural response to down grade or degrade things if we don’t like them. But I bet if you ask a Taylor Swift fan if They like Pantera or Marilyn Manson I think they would have the same response as you. They wouldn’t like it because they didn’t understand the lyrics and it was to loud. The ability to I think to analyze is to step away from the personal preference and take the song for what it is. Judge not on the qualities you prefer but the quality of the performance.
